KEJIMKUJIK NATIONAL PARK

Background

Located in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Kejimkujik National Park is the only inland Canadian park located in the Maritimes. Open year round to visitors, it features many lakes and rivers ideal for canoeing as well as many sites for camping. The lush woodlands and gently rolling landscapes are home to a variety of wildlife.

As part of the Federal House in Order Program and in keeping with Parks Canada policy on showing leadership in the area of sustainable development, a solar water heating system was installed to preheat shower water.

The solar water heating system was installed on the Kejimikujik Shower building located at Jeremys Bay Campground, Kejimikujik National Park. The building has a male and female shower room, each with 9 shower stalls. The building is operational from May to September each year.

The solar system consists of the following major components:

• 8 – G32-P liquid flat solar collectors
• 2 x 100 IG glass lined steel storage tanks
• BP140 Brass pump, 140 GPH
• Domestic water expansion tank
• Solar differential controller

The solar system is an open loop seasonal system. The shower water located in the 2 - 100 IG tanks is circulated through the solar collectors and back intot the tanks. When shower water is being used, it is drawn from the solar storage tanks, heated, (if necessary) by an oil fired water heating system, and then piped tot he shower stalls.
